Nara Thai, Bangkok

I love Bangkok. Every time I visit, I always find something new and exciting to do or see there. Whether it be in fashion, the arts, sightseeing or, of course… FOOD!

During my most recent (but unfortunately not actually so-recent) trip,  I re-visited Nara Thai at Central World. The first time I tasted the beef noodles there, I went back three times in one week! So, I figured on this trip, I should sample some of the other stuff on the menu and see how they stack up against my favorite beef noodles (the Kway Tiew Rua noodles).

In anticipation of the savory meal ahead, a nice cup of tea to cleanse my palate!

Busaba, Kuala Lumpur – Take two

We celebrated Dad’s birthday at Busaba.

A relatively new Thai restaurant around the Bangsar block, I like Busaba for its creative Thai fusion recipes. The food is flavorful, but the preparation is sometimes hit or miss. Very heartwarming food, however, and apt for a family dinner or get together with friends.

This is my second round at Busaba, my earlier review was brief and almost a year ago on 26 January 2011 – it was more a touch and go.

We started with appetizers:

Busaba, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Bangsar Shopping Complex (BSC) has now become one of my favourite hang outs. The recently refurbished friendly neighbourhood mall has done well indeed, with many eateries mushrooming over the last half year or so. Looks like it will be a superlicious year ahead, for me at least.

I have heard much about Busaba, a new eatery located in BSC, first floor right next to Alexis so I finally had an opportunity to explore it, thanks to a lovely dinner invitation.

The 14th outlet to be opened, Busaba is owned and operated by Sea Cuisine which also owns Celadon, Flying Chillies, Amarin Heavenly Thai, Basil,  Good Evening Bangkok and Absolute Thai.

Quiet and quaint, this is a great place for catch up. In fact, it felt quite homely and cosy. The service was commendable, very prompt and attentive waiters, perhaps it  was because it was not a busy night.

I had not come prepared so the pictures are slightly hazy due to the rather dark interior and lack of a better camera (used the Blackberry).

Started light and easy with soup, however I omitted to snap a picture before I devoured it. I had the creamy coconut chicken mushroom thai soup (I think) as I wanted something less spicy. Very light based tom-yam soup like and the chicken slices were surprisingly tender -good stuff!

Green curry fish ball centred with egg yolk.

You could choose to have either salted fish or buttered bread (my choice) as your dip. The only thing I felt lacking in this dish was the egg yolk which came in measely portion. Could have added a bit more volume there to give the chewy springy fish balls that “oomph”.

Sizzling beef sirloin with special sauce (sweet sour based), served on hot plate.

This was slightly overcooked, but all in all, worth a try. The sauce brought a sweet tangy flavour which was a shame, as good beef should not be accompanied by a powerful condiment which musks its original flavour. But no surprise since this is a Thai fusion eatery afterall.

Steam siakap in sweet (again!) lime sauce. This was highly recommended by the waiter but to be honest, I didn’t think much of it. Upside was the fish tasted fresh and didn’t have that “fishy” taste. So unless you are really into fish ..

Century egg with basil leaves. I like century egg so I enjoyed this very much.

The highlight for me would inevitably be the dessert. I have a sweet tooth, just can’t help it.

Tub tim krob, a popular Thai dessert made of shaven ice soaked in creamy coconut milk accessorized by red ruby glazed water chestnuts, thin slices of coconut and jackfruit (also known as nangka, an exotic fruit in Malaysia).

Another all time favourite: Sticky fragrant rice (slighted salted) and fresh mango with cream.

Overall, an extremely satisfying meal not to mention it is always good company that counts. Will be sure to be back for a second round of feast, but perhaps not so soon as I have my eyes cast on other outlets.
